New Mailboxes are here... well, sort of
The long wait for new Mailboxes has finally come to an end... sort of. Though the mailboxes are new looking, they appear to be refurbished units with fresh powedercoat paint. They are not the new Red Community Mailboxes that we were expecting. Either way, it is better than a poke in the eye with a sharp stick. Cheadle's Barry Duffield originally started the ball rolling with sending a request to Canada Post along with several pictures of our decrepid and dying postal boxes and comparing them to the new red ones set up in other local communities. Now 3 years later and after several requests made by the Community along with Wheatland County, it seems that something has finally happened. The good news is that these boxes do look a whole lot better than the old rusty ones. A statement from Canada Post has indicated that in order to get the new style boxes, Cheadle would have to go by a new address system which matches to house numbers along with a new postal code. Cheadle once had its own postal code (TOJ 3H0) until Canada Post instructed residents to switch to the Strathmore code (T1P 1J6). Since changing everyone's mailing address is a huge pain in the ... , we may just have to wait until a new solution presents itself.
Once summer arrives, we can look at relocating and installing a proper concrete pad in the vicinity for the mailboxes to rest on, along with some shrubs and nice landscaping. Back in the early 80's a concrete pad was located there, but removed due to road work in the area. It has been requested that a new location for the mail boxes be found as the existing location provides an eye-sore for residents in the local area. It has been suggested that Cheadle follow other communities, but placing the mailbox location near the community hall. A few options have been brought to the table and community members will be given the option to vote on the issue in the very near future.
Either way, the newer mailboxes will greatly improve the appearance of Cheadle and the Information Board area located near the mailboxes. Thank-you to Bernice Bland for keeping on Canada Post to have this done.
